Sanderling or sandpipers as they are sometimes known are beautiful small shorebirds that spend most of their day right on the water's edge. As the waves break on the soft sand these little birds will scurry to pick up tiny sea creatures that make up their main diet. They run so fast you cannot see their little legs moving.

Our sanderlings are made from recycled papers and covered with hand-made mulberry paper, then hand painted. The birds are mounted on a driftwood base that we collect on the Papham beach near our studio here in midcoast Maine.

A small shell decorates the driftwood.
