The Cormorant is one of the common sea birds we see along the shores of mid-coast Maine. These birds can dive for 2-3 minutes at time as they hunt for small fish near the shoreline. While in the water you see just the top of their back and their long necks.
What I find most exciting is when they take off. The Cormorant's very powerful wings slap the water for the first few wing-beats. Once in flight they can fly inches above the water.
The story of our cormorant begins with a piece of discarded campfire wood. This was an exciting find as I had to do very little to bring out the shape. It was magical how this bird was almost completely shaped. The next challenge was adding the wing to get the sense of flight. We used recycled paper covered in hand-made mulberry paper to shape the wing.
She is mounted onto another piece of driftwood plank we gathered on the beach.
